Bounce Back Strong: A Basketball Clinic for Health and Hope

A powerful story emerged from a 12-under basketball team in an impoverished relocation community for survivors of Typhoon Haiyan in Barangay Sta. Elena, Tacloban City. Composed of malnourished boys, many experiencing stunted growth, the team rose from humble beginnings in a newly built school and earned the opportunity to compete in an interschool tournament. Despite their physical challenges and limited exposure, they defied expectations by becoming district champions—an extraordinary achievement for a team competing for the very first time.

Their journey did not end there. Advancing to the City Meet, they faced larger schools with highly trained athletes and far greater resources. For some of these boys, it was their first time stepping into the city center, even though it was only a short distance from their community. Yet, against all odds, they secured second place in the citywide competition. These were children who often had to work at a young age just to earn a few pesos, fetch water for survival, miss school due to hardship, and endure days without sufficient meals—yet they stood on the podium as champions in spirit and resilience.

Moved by their story, VSS Missions, in partnership with the VSS Tacloban Sites Ball Club, organized a basketball clinic on January 23, 2026. A professional coach was engaged to provide proper training, equipping the young athletes with foundational skills and discipline. The initiative also included the distribution of meals, basketballs, and sacks of rice to support the school’s feeding program. More than just a sports activity, the clinic became a platform to extend compassion, inspire hope, and rekindle dreams.

In every drill, every shared meal, and every word of encouragement, the children were reminded that their circumstances do not define their future. Through this initiative, they experienced not only the joy of the game but also the love and grace that uplift and transform lives. As it is written in Proverbs 22:9, “The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor.”
